You Don’t Need to Be Chosen: Reclaiming Your Confidence at Work

March 31, 20253 min read

There was a time I believed that if I worked hard enough—trained enough—proved myself enough—I would be rewarded.

But the day I walked into that interview, fully qualified and confident, something shifted. I gave it everything I had. I showed up with experience, joy, and certainty. But I still didn’t get the job.

Instead, I came back from vacation to hear that the roles had been filled. One of the chosen ones was someone I had trained. Let that sink in.

That Day Changed Me

That moment made something in me snap. I had done everything “right”—the prep, the sacrifice, the work—and I was still overlooked.

I felt invisible. I felt betrayed. And I was tired—physically, emotionally, and mentally. My body carried the weight of that anger and disappointment. My blood pressure skyrocketed. I gained weight. My joy faded.

I was surviving. But I wasn’t living.

The Breaking Point Was Also the Turning Point

I kept showing up, but not for me. I trained the people they chose instead of me. I smiled. I swallowed the truth. I minimized my pain because I was afraid of being seen as “angry” or “difficult.”

But inside, I was screaming.

It wasn’t until I started telling the truth—to myself and to others—that I began to heal.

I began saying:

  • “No, I didn’t get the job—but I was qualified.”

  • “Yes, they made her an office by the window and kept me in the back.”

  • “Yes, I’m angry. And that’s valid.”

Here’s What I Know Now

💥 You don’t have to wait to be chosen.
💥 You don’t have to stay silent to be seen as professional.
💥 You don’t have to shrink to be safe.
💥 You don’t need to prove anything to people who can’t—or won’t—see your brilliance.

Your value doesn’t begin or end with someone else's decision.

I Took My Power Back

I stopped:

  • Saying yes when I meant no

  • Offering free emotional labor

  • Showing up out of fear of being disliked

And I started:

  • Speaking up

  • Honoring my energy

  • Rebuilding myself—physically, mentally, and spiritually

Now, I no longer take blood pressure medication. I've released 80 pounds. And most importantly, I know who I am—and I’m no longer asking for permission to be her.

A Reminder for You

Sis, if you’ve ever been overlooked, ignored, or passed over—know this:

✨ You’re not crazy.
✨ You’re not overreacting.
✨ You’re not too sensitive.

You are valid. You are valuable. And you don’t have to wait for the world to tell you so.

Your Confidence Comes From Within

This journey? It’s not about them.

It’s about you choosing you.
It’s about you creating a new story—on your terms.
It’s about knowing your worth, even when they try to question it.

You don’t have to hustle harder to be seen. You don’t have to keep proving yourself to people who are committed to misunderstanding you.

You just need to root yourself in your confidence.
